Do Digital Right

Publishers are at a crossroads. Especially educational publishers. While there is still a place for printed materials, the educational market is increasingly moving to digital. Recently, Steve Paxhia and Bill Trippe of The Gilbane Group performed a comprehensive study of the digital book publishing industry to compile a report of best practices. Follett Digital Resources is proud to be one of the sponsors of the study. What follows is a summarization of one section of the study report, “Digital Platforms and Technologies for Publishers: Implementations Beyond eBook.”

What can we learn from publishers in other market segments that have already made significant moves from print to digital content? Incorporate the features and functionality into your digital offerings that help to expand the reading and learning experience and give readers better perceived value.

How does this translate to education? Focus on the following:

Take advantage of the rich media capabilities of digital. Videos bring complex concepts to life. Integrated assessments measure comprehension. Built-in algorithms deliver personalized content on the fly to customize content to the student’s learning style and pace.

Link to resources for more information.
Students who have grown up exploring the Internet are used to virtually instant access to information. Providing appropriate links allow you to guide readers to your products, and help you become a more trusted, authoritative source they will return to again and again.

Build for multiple formats.
The use of mobile devices such as the iPhone and iTouch has exploded and there’s no end in sight. And when you build “digitally native” content, it also enables you to offer chapters or synopsis in “chunks” and thereby drive additional sales.

Look for new sources of content.
Take away the up-front costs of producing and distributing printed books and it becomes much more cost-effective to look to unknown or new authors or explore the margins of fulfill the content needs of different segments and build additional revenue.

Make digital more affordable.
A digital publishing platform sized to fit your business model and market opportunities is a necessity. It will streamline your workflow to help you provide the cost-effective, feature-packed products your customers want.
